What's Important for A Car, Style or Substance

Have you ever noticed that many things in life often appear one way on the outside. And this image doesn't really match up with what they truly represent. Or there is the vice-versa scenario where their image may not seem all that impressive at first. But in reality, they are worth their weight in gold? Or they are kind of like a diamond in the rough?

It's rare that we encounter the right blend of beauty, style and substance. Motor Trend actually wrote an article entitled, "Ten Cars That Prioritize Style Over Substance." Here is their list, along with some brief highlighted quotes:

(1) Volkswagen Beetle

  • Described as "retro-chic" and "muscular"

(2) Nissan Juke

  • Has "unconventional exterior styling" with looks that are "polarizing"

(3) BMW i3

  • Exterior is said to be "blocky"
  • Car design "prioritizes looking weird to flaunt its eco-credentials."

(4) Hyundai Veloster

  • Has an aggressive front fascia"
  • Designed with an "asymmetrical layout" having a single door on the driver's side and two doors on the passenger side.

(5) Mercedes Benz CLA- Class

  • Has "coupelike styling" along with "panache and prestige"

(6) Mini Paceman

  • Personality is described as being "bubbly," with a guarantee that the driver will get "plenty of stares"

(7) Kia Soul

  • Appearance provides a "dash of fun"and a "joyful personality."
  • Cool details include "color changing speaker lights" and "vibrant exterior colors."

(8) Mazda CX-3

  • A stylish crossover vehicle which "looks more expensive than it actually is."

(9) Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

  • Evokes a "stunning design statement" that brims with panache

(10) Fiat 500/500c

  • Has a "cheeky bubbly exterior"
  • Characterized by a "retro-chic flair"
  • Said to "wear its Italian charm on its fenders."
Could it be that the way we see cars is somehow related to how we view people? Many of us are drawn (or repelled) by the impression we get from outer appearances. For some people how things appear is all important to them. For others, not so much.

Whereas style has the power to captivate our attention, what about the element of substance? Deep down we also care about a person's level of integrity, their trustworthiness and what values they embody. When it comes to cars, qualities like reliability, longevity and practicality also matter to us.

Toyota, for example builds their vehicles to "demand respect at every corner." Whereas the brand has a strong reputation for being practical, 2016 represents a pivotal year for it's evolution, particularly in the area of design.  For example the Toyota Camry's exterior contours is described as "aggressive" with a distinctive "sport mesh front grille, LED headlights and 18 inch alloy wheels."

Another popular model, the Corolla also sports a visually compelling black grille, along with aerodynamic lines and a rear spoiler.

To compliment their newly designed, elegant exteriors, both cars deliver solid substance with amazing technology that "elevates your drive." And this goes way beyond the level of bells and whistles.  Let's talk about useful, or even lifesaving.

Information and More - Toyota Camry

One notable feature in the 2016 Toyota Corolla includes the Entune App. Face it, many of us are pressed for time as we hustle from one appointment or destination to the next. How convenient is it to be able to handle some of the smaller but important things in life within arm's reach and not have to fumble for your phone?  With the Entune system, you can make reservations for dinner, find the lowest gas prices and purchase movie tickets right from the center console. You can even view important trip information as well from your screen.

Furthermore, the Camry also has a built in system to detect potential collisions. It then uses these signals to enact a sophisticated system of safety features to prevent crashes.

There is also a smart tire pressure monitor system that alerts you of depleted air pressure ahead of time so that a soft tire doesn't catch you by surprise.

These are just a few examples of many examples of what the new generation Toyota Camry offers.

Toyota Corolla - Horsepower, Gas Mileage and More

The Toyota Corolla boasts two powertrain option levels offering the following horsepower outputs:

(1) 132 hp
(2) 140 hp

Like the Camry, it also comes with impressive technology that is highly relevant to our everyday needs. This includes:

(1) built in backup camera
(2)  steering wheel controls for audio and making phone calls
(3) navigation with voice recognition

Furthermore, the engineering of the Corolla enables a continued streak of dependable reliability as well as a 5 star award winning set of safety features. Learn more about the other features offered by the new Corolla.

Q- Certification

A common used car certification label that most consumers are aware of is Certified Pre-Owned  (CPO). However, some car dealerships offer another type, known as Q-Certified, which is also associated with warranty coverage (furnished by an affiliate company), although it is not provided by the manufacturer.

Q-Certified Vehicles

Each used vehicle sold as Q-Certified needs to meet the following requirements:

  • 129-point inspection performed by ASE Certified Technicians to assess the quality of components such as: exhaust system, tires, drivetrain, engine, transmission, brakes, steering, suspension, heating and cooling systems
  • Thorough vehicle history evaluation by Experian Automotive (providers of Auto Check) to ensure that the car receives a clean vehicle title report. For examples
  • Vehicles must be inspected to make sure that they do not have DMV (Department of Motor Vehicle) reports of issues such as fires, salvage, lemon histories, odometer issues, or flood damage.
  • Cars are required to meet or exceed reconditioning standards
Purchasers of Q-Certified vehicles will then receive a pre-owned vehicle inspection report based on the above criteria.

Q-Certified Dealerships

Dealerships who are part of the Q-Certified program must uphold a common set of standards.

(1) Each dealership needs to have technicians who have completed Q-Certified training so that they can adeptly perform detailed and comprehensive inspection and reconditioning processes

(2) Q-Certified dealerships are routinely evaluated by an independent third party for quality control to make sure that the are in compliance with Q-Certified standards.

Examples that you will find for  Q-Certified Dealerships on the first page of Google include: Audi San Diego, Orlando KIA West, and Hyundai Certified.

Warranty

In most cases, a Q-Certified warranty will cover the powertrain on a limited bases. For example, at Team One Toyota which carries an impressive array of used cars, a Q-Certified Warranty covers a  two year period or 100,000 miles

Other warranty terms include the following:

(1) a required deductible per visit
(2) nationwide protection within Canada and the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii
(3) a list of customer responsibilities for maintenance and repair

Customers are responsible for servicing their vehicle at recommended mileage intervals, and as defined by the manufacturer's manual. They are also responsible for keeping copies of repair orders which document the services performed during the coverage period.

Customers are also required to return to their Q-Certified Authorized Dealership (or affiliate) for repairs covered under their warranty.

Benefits

Customers receive 1year memberships to Road America's Auto Assist Program which offers help 24 hours and 7 days a week.  Members can anticipate the following benefits:

Roadside Assistance

  • Customers are reimbursed up to $50 per occurrence of covered roadside assistance.
  • When towing is required, vehicles will be transported to the nearest Q-Certified repair facility
  • Flat tires are removed and replaced with the member's spare tire
  • Battery service includes jump starts to revive failed batteries
  • Lockout assistance is provided to help regain entry to the vehicle when keys are locked inside
  • Gas, oil, fluid and water are delivered during emergency situations
Emergency Travel Expense

  • If a member experiences mechanical failure more than 100 miles away from their residence, they will receive up to $1000 in reimbursement for emergency transportation expenditures, meals and lodging. Exceptions include California and New York
Reimbursement And Tire Hazard Protection

  • Membership includes coverage of repair costs up to $50 or replacement costs up to $250 per tire ( due to road hazards such as debris, potholes, cracks and breaks).
However the Tire Hazard Protection will be void, if the tire wear reaches 3/32 inch during the one year period of overage. This protection plan is not applicable in the following states: Florida, Maryland, New York, Tennessee, Washington and California.

Used cars, which were once new, are now being built for reliability and longer lifespans. Furthermore, with programs like CPO and now, Q-Certified, today's purchasers of pre-owned vehicles are offered more peace of mind than ever.

Not Your Stereotypical Car Dealership - Toyota of Slidell in Slidell Louisiana

Over the years, car dealerships have earned a less than flattering reputation. In fact, the stereotypical dealership experience has become somewhat of a joke. Take this video as a case in point.

But as mentioned in previous posts, things are changing. Nowadays, there are many car dealerships which actually defy the commonly held stereotype, illustrated by the video above and many forms of (humorous) content across the web. One such example is Toyota of Slidell. I had previously written an earlier post on their trade in promotion. And thus I was curious to know more about what types of reviews they were receiving. When I found out, I was pleasantly surprised.

Testimonials By Real Life Customers Who Bought Their Vehicle From Toyota of Slidell

One site that potential car buyers often refer to when researching dealerships is Dealer Rater. They have an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. Here are a few almost too good to be true testimonials from real people:

  • "Just purchased my 3rd vehicle from Toyota of Slidell. No hassle negotiations. "Honest effort to please. In fact, I was entitled to a $2500 rebate from Toyota that inadvertently was not included when the paperwork was prepared. The Finance Manager called me to come back to re-do the paperwork. I hadn't noticed the error and probably NEVER would have." - posted by 3X a winner

  • This is my third Toyota that I have bought from this Dealership. Mr. Rusty Munster is the friendliest and the most courteous person I have had the pleasure to meet. Mr. Ryan Trainer has done everything possible to make me feel at home and make at ease. I would recommend a Toyota to anyone looking to buy a car, and to buy it from - posted by FOOFOO1376

  • From the moment I arrived they helped me with my purchase. Mr. Rick Oliveri was the best ,he showed me everything I wanted to look at until I made my decision to sit and start paperwork. I asked for a specific price point and payment. and he did everything possible to work the numbers. Great atmosphere and friendly employees. I would recommend anyone to visit Toyota of Slidell and definitely ask for Mr. Rick Oliveri. - posted by priscilla23

  • I was dreading buy a new car. I have had a few bad experiences. Adam was great, no pressure. Told him what I was looking for and what I could do without. He delivered quick and efficiently. Was my BEST buying experience ever. Thanks Adam, will deifinately be singing your praises. - posted by Dgiglio

  • Went to the dealership for my 1st oil change on my 2016 Tundra Crew Max. Couldn't be happier with the service provided. They took my truck back right away, changed the oil, checked all of the fluids, washed and had the truck back to me by time I had gotten a complimentary drink and browsed through a magazine in the waiting area. Been a customer of this dealership for 12 years and this is only one of the reasons why. - posted by yota4life

Surely, most people can tell the difference between genuine testimonials and ones that are likely to be fake (possibly posted by the business ). But in case there is any confusion on this point, real feedback will include very specific details and good number of words. Fake testimonials tend to be very short and general (e.g. "loved my experience, will shop here again).

It seems quite clear that Toyota of Slidell has many happy customers who are glad to discuss their wonderful experiences at this dealership. Also, they've even made their inventory conveniently available on their site, along with a number of helpful and informative features, including their best price button and even a bonus $500 instant trade in coupon. What car shopper wouldn't appreciate that?

Dealership Offers No Cost Lifetime Warranty

The previous post discussed how car dealerships are changing the way they do business. Rather than relying on obscure phrasing and the limited knowledge possessed by the average customer, they are now working on creating truly amazing and compelling offers that would be hard for anyone to refuse.

Traditionally, standard car warranties usually cover 5 years/60,000 miles on the vehicle's powertrain. The powertrain is basically a system of parts that provides the car's power. It's components include:

  • driveshaft
  • transmission
  • engine
  • general category of internal workings (e.g. engine block, cylinder heads, internally lubricated parts, drive axles)
Power is generated by the engine. It is then transmitted to the driveshaft by way of the transmission.

Thus under a powertrain warranty, the dealership or manufacturer covers the cost of repairing the powertrain (including parts, labor and fluids), in the event of mechanical problems.

But now, the powertrain warranties are being redefined well beyond the 5 year, 60,000 mile limit.

Momentum Toyota Offers Lifetime Warranty

Momentum Toyota in Fairfield, CA is an example of a dealership that is offering a lifetime warranty. Here is their homepage banner, which has the words, "Lifetime warranty at no cost as long as you own your car."

By the way, if you check out their site,  you will find that they carry a very impressive selection of new Toyota cars as well as pre-owned vehicles.  And in contrast to the old days of having to view their inventory in person by driving down to the physical location of the dealership, the new trend is to post inventory items on the site itself and to have relevant information on hand, such as VIN number, pricing, engine and transmission type and more. This is surely a far more convenient car shopping approach for the average person, interested in buying a Toyota Avalon, or other vehicle of their choice.

What are the Terms?

Generally, lifetime powertrain warranties have no restrictions on mileage or years driven. And they promise no additional charge should a problem arise. However, this is contingent on the vehicle being a newer model, purchased at less than 5000 miles, and an adherence to scheduled maintenance recommendations. The owner is also responsible for keeping the documentation for their maintenance visits.

Why Are Car Dealers Able to Offer Lifetime Warranties?

Newer cars are being made to last. It is not uncommon to find that these vehicles can be driven for up to 200,000 miles or even more. Therefore, in this day and age, it is extremely unlikely that major powertrain issues can develop with these remarkable standards in place.

Furthermore, car dealerships make it possible to have these types of warranties by partnering with companies that specialize in warranty services (e.g. Fidelity Warranty Services)

Car Dealer Offers For Today's Consumer - Case Example, Toyota of Slidell

Let's face it. Car dealerships have long been associated with less than clear ethics and communication. It used to be that buyers would spend long hours on their off days (e.g. Saturday) at the dealership, engaging in lengthy, haggling on the price of the vehicle they wanted to buy. Naturally, with these types of bad dealership experiences,  a lot of fuzzy gray lines can be expected.

But now, largely thanks to the internet, consumers have become much smarter and more informed. And because of this, a much stronger demand has developed for straight forward deal terms and transactions. Therefore, in order for dealers to stay competitive, it has become essential for them to meet this demand. Dealers are now becoming more innovative in making transparent, but compelling offers on their cars, relying less on fine print, obscure wording and clever, slight of hand maneuvers in the deal making process.

The idea is now to actually give the customer what they are truly interested in and to continuously come up with new and innovative offers that are hard to refuse.

Innovative Trade In Deal - Toyota of Slidell

Thus, today's dealership experience is much different than it has been in the past. Here is one example from Toyota of Slidell, in Slidell Louisiana.

Surely the message of this campaign is surely unexpected and comes as a surprise. In most cases, dealerships offer to purchase trade ins as a way to lower the monthly payments offered to the end customer. But in this case, the dealership is offering to buy pre-owned vehicles without the condition requiring the customer to make a purchase from the same company.

So what's the catch? Certainly, the trade in needs to meet certain high standards in order to be considered. But also, consider the fact that  the dealership is most likely interested in expanding their available stock of pre-owned cars. In today's market, buying a used automobile is not the same as it has been in the past. Cars are now being built to last a much longer time. Therefore, used cars can be expected to be far more reliable than before. And, this has contributed to greater consumer demand for pre-owned vehicles.

So it does work in the the dealership's best interest to continuously invest in a greater selection of quality used cars.

In the case of Toyota of Slidell, their used car inventory includes a variety of makes outside the Toyota brand. Examples from their search drop down on their used car inventory page  include: Acura, Volkswagen, Subaru, Ram, Nissan, Mazda, Kia, Jeep, Infiniti, Hyundai, Honda, GMC, Ford and Dodge.

So what do you think? Does the campaign, "We'll Buy Your Trade, Even If You Don't Buy From Us," grab and captivate your attention? Does it increase your trust in the dealership so that you might consider doing business with them in the future?
